# Tony Long at Wired - Jan. 22, 1984: Dawn of the Mac - the Macintosh was introduced 23 years ago yesterday in a Chiat/Day Superbowl ad. View it below, or a slightly different version at the story link. [tuaw] # Tyler Hamilton at Technology Review - Battery Breakthrough? - ultracapacitors may provide the batteries of the future. EEStor plans to provide batteries for the ZENN (Zero Emission No Noise) car later this year, an electric car with ultracapacitor batteries that can drive 500 miles on $9 worth of electricity, and recharge (every 200 miles) in ten minutes. The Zenn car is already for sale, but with lead-acid batteries, a 35-mile range, and a 25 MPH top speed, bascially a road-worthy golf cart. The new battery will increase its range and, hopefully, its speed, though the article doesn' mention that. Maxwell Technologies also sells ultracapacitor batteries.
# Gabriel Otte - OSXplanet - another worldview desktop, like EarthDesk, but free, though Mr. Otte asks for a $20 donation. Show the earth, in a selectable projection, with night and day, and, optionally, clouds, storms, satellites, volcanos, earthquakes, cities, and storm paths. You can view any planet in the solar system, and center the view on a particular city (for Earth) or show it as seen from another planet (or the Sun). Unlike EarthDesk, OSXplanet doesn't simulate moonlight. Nice. Will be on my desktop until I get tired of it.
# OSXGuide.com - Freeware of the Day: Max 0.7.1 Audio Converter - Rip CDs or convert files between audio formats, sbooth.org's Max does it all, for free. [macbytes]
# Gizmodo - Sansa Xpress One-ups The iPod Shuf...Oh Wait - From SanDisk, the Sansa Express, a $60, one gig USB flash drive that plays MP3, WMA, Protected WMA, WAV, and Audible files. Also contains an FM tuner, from which it can record. 15-hour, rechargeable lithium polymer battery. Appears to be Windows only. [gizmodo]
# jgh23 Mac OS X Hints - A possible fix for unreliable printing over Airport - the writer was experiencing partial printing on his Canon IP5000 printer connected to his Airport Express. He fixed it with a couple of command-line commands to throttle the bandwidth to the printer.
