Prey

# natersuk at YouTube - HP Scanjet Music - somebody programmed a scanner to play music. Hehe. I visited the Boulder Flight Control Center in 1973 or thereabouts. They had a whole room full of IBM 360s, and another room full of Burroughs machines. The operator there played tunes for us on his line printer. Paper spewing and music playing. [gizmodo]

# Aspyr Media - Prey is a first-person shooter. I found it last night looking for a Doom 3 demo (only available for Windows). Downloaded the demo from Macgamefiles.com. Went through the opening scene today. It follows the adventures of a Cherokee garage mechanic who is kidnapped by extraterrestrials at the end of the first scene (after beating two thugs senseless with his pipe wrench). The demo has the first five levels. "Turns the first-person shooter game upside down." Rated M, Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language. Requires a 1.8 GHz G5 or Intel processor or better and at least 512 megs of RAM. Played smoothly on my 2.16 GHz 20" Core 2 Duo iMac. Don't know the price at present because the Apple Store was closed for updates when I checked. Must be adding those new products that everybody says they're announcing today.

# SourceForge - Mac OS X Ext2 Filesystem - an extension that makes Linux Ext2 file systems available from Tiger. Haven't tried it. [versiontracker]

# Dag Ågren - Xee v2.0 is out. A nice image viewer and browser that I use primarily for saving PNG files from ICNS files to get the nice App icons I post here. Requires Mac OS X 10.4 now. I've been using it for a while, but wondered why it started up so slow. Well, it used to be PPC only, so my machine was emulating with Rosetta. This one is a universal binary. Starts much faster! # Dag Ågren - The Unarchiver v1.4 is out. Adds pax archives and fixes some bugs. Experimental support for Mac OS X 10.3. The Unarchiver knows how to decompress lots and lots of different archive formats, using the libxad library. And it's fast. Been using it for a while. [versiontracker]
