# Participatory Culture Foundation - Democracy TV is a free, cross-platform video player. Groks QuickTime, WMV, MPEG, AVI, XVID, and more. Has a built-in channel guide with over 1,000 channels of free streaming video. Can search and download videos from YouTube, Yahoo! Video, Google Video, Blogdigger, Revver, DailyMotion, and blip.tv. Has a built-in BitTorrent client. And the OS X client is only an 8.9 meg download. Open Source, GPL. It played the DVD I ripped the other day. It downloaded and played a YouTube video. It listed a bunch of search results on Google Video, but said "Not Found" when I tried to download them. Nicely done application. [devcenter]
# Gandreas Software distributes an assortment of utilities, games, developer utilities, and dashboard widgets. I like their mondo life widget, Conway's life and more. And their Advent widget is the best reproduction I've seen of the old Colossal Cave text adventure, in front of which I spent many hours, and reams of DecWriter paper, at Baker House (M.I.T. dorm), back in 1975 or thereabouts. # Freeverse - lineform is an OS X drawing program. $80. Demo worked for me.
# Inkscape is a free, open-source, vector graphics editor. It's the featured download on Apple's Unix & Open Source page (though they have a slightly older version). Requires X11, from the Extras DVD. "Draw Freely." [devcenter]
# Mac Game Store - Luxor Mahjong is a flashy, full-screen, Mahjong solitaire app with an Egyptian flair. $20. Demo worked for me. [macworld]
# Fruit Bad Software - kcpasswd is a little command-line utility that allows the root user to change a user's KeyChain password. Could be useful if you forget it. [versiontracker]
