XAMPP & Drive-In

# Apache Friends - XAMPP for Mac OS X "is the simplest, most practical and most complete webserver solution for Mac OS X. The distribution includes an Apache 2 web server, integrated with the latest builds of MySQL, PHP (both 4 and 5) and Perl. It comes as a Mac OS X Installer package which contains all the necessary files and requires no dependencies." Worked good for me. Mac OS X 10.4 (Intel) and higher. I've used XAMPP on Windows and Linux, and have always been happy with the results. Haven't tried my PHP/MySQL web sites yet, but I will.

# Flip4Mac - Drive-in "is an innovative application that allows you to store your personal DVD movie library on your Mac. It is now available as a public beta. Using Drive-in you can create an image of a DVD disc on your laptop or home entertainment system. The image preserves the quality, navigation and special features of the original DVD and can be played using Apple's DVD Player or Front Row." Installation required a restart of my Mac. I had to register my copy before I could save a DVD image to disk. The saved image, of a 2 hour movie that I own, took 7.52 gigs of disk space and a litle over half an hour. Worked good. Saving the same DVD, movie only without the special features, as an MP4 with HandBrake took 1 gig of disk space. This beta of Drive-In expires on May 1 and works only on MacOS X version 10.4 (Tiger). To play saved images after that, you have to purchase a copy for "somewhere around $50". [macdailynews]

# Jaanus at Skype - Four Skypes in one box - Jaanus ran Linux in on Parallels Virtual Machine (VM), Windows in another, and a Pocket PC emulator inside the Windows VM. This allowed him to have four versions of Skype running simultaneously on one screen. Hehe. [tuaw]
