# Mailplane puts a Cocoa wrapper around Gmail, turning it into a full-fledged Mac OS X application. This allows "mailto" links to work, and sending images through Gmail from iPhoto. It also has an "Attach screenshot" feature. Another innovative use of Apple Webkit technology. Currently in a private beta test that was filled up an hour after yesterday's MacNN announcement, but you can sign up to be included in the next beta. Already very good quality. I found only a couple of small problems, neither of which is fatal. The only thing I miss is Firefox'es incremental search feature, but I don't use that very often in Gmail. The beta is free for a limited time. Final application price not yet set. [macnn]
# OS X Ninja - otx, "otool's bastard son", "stands for 'object tool extended'. otx uses otool (object tool) to disassemble a Mach-O executable file, then enhances the disassembled output. Simple enhancements include adding the machine code of each instruction and the offset of each instruction from the beginning of a function. More complicated enhancements include displaying the names and data types of ObjC methods even if symbols have been stripped, and adding comments that describe member variables, function calls, static data and more." I used otx to disassemble the iCalFix executable, then used Emacs hexl-mode to patch it to work with iCal 2.0.5. I managed to get it to work, but at the expense of causing the iCal "Preferences..." to crash. [google]
# Robert Blum - iCalFix 0.6 - bowing to pressure from his users, Mr. Blum released a Mac OS X 10.4.9 compatible version of his plug-in that sets automatic alarms on new iCal appointments. It has an installer now, allows different alarm defaults for all-day appointments, has an icon in the preference pane, works with all OSX-supported sound types, and no longer displays the annoying SIMBL-related error message. Yay! I donated $10. [blum]
# Bare Bones Software - Yojimbo 1.4.2 Release Notes - a maintenance release that works around a QuickTime 7.1.5 issue. Download from the updates page. [macworld]
# onesuite.com "provides low cost prepaid long distance & international calling cards and phone cards. NO monthly fee, NO connection charges! All PINs are rechargeable online and over the phone." My son is visiting China for two weeks with his high school history class. My wife works with a woman from China who recommended this service. We called him last night for 2.2¢ per minute. Domestic USA calls cost 2.5¢ per minute. Costs more if you use a toll-free access number instead of a local one, or if you use a pay phone. You have to pay them at least once every six months to keep your account active. Minimum $10 purchase. You dial a local access number, enter your 14-digit PIN, then the number you want to call (for China this is 011 for international, 86 for China, a two-digit city code, and an eight or nine digit number. But it's worth it (to me) for the money savings. And they accept PayPal.
