Google Voice Local Search

Saturday, April 7, 2007

# Google Voice Local Search lets you do searches for local businesses on your telephone. Dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411), say the city and state, then say the business name or category. It reads off a list of matches, and you can pick "number whatever" at any point. It then connects you. Very nice. Recognized my voice perfectly. Cute little mumbling sound while it's working. Free. Google Labs

# VMWare Fusion Beta 3 was released on Thursday. It's a virtual machine application for the Macintosh. Supports 64-bit and multi-core. Booted Puppy Linux 2.14 from it's Live CD. Sound and networking worked. Installed Fedora Core 6, 386 version, something Parallels has never done successfully (installer CD boots, but graphics doesn't work). It has one bad bug that it has twice gotten into a state where I couldn't switch mouse and keyboard focus back to the Mac. I was stuck in the emulator, once with no visible mouse cursor. May be related to my wireless keyboard and mouse, since I got a momentary pop-up saying that the computer had lost connection with them.
