"All Black" Screen Saver

Thursday, May 3, 2007

# Peter Gabriel's we7 service provides free MP3 music downloads, supported by 10-second ads at the beginning of each tune. Not much there yet, but it works. I wish them luck. Don't miss the "New Artists" tab. I'm currently enjoying "Donald's Theme" from Big Strides - Cry it All Out.

# I made a 100x100 black square yesterday with Seashore. "Whatever for?" you may ask. I've reported on a few different screen savers here. I like colorful screen savers. But I recently moved my computer into my bedroom, to save the nearly $300/month it cost for an office space and DSL line. With the computer facing the bed, I want it to be black. I could sleep it, but then I lose connection to my IRC channels and whatever video I'm downloading. So I decided I wanted a black-out screen saver. Couldn't find one. The solution? An all-black image in an iPhoto Slideshow. Selecting the "All Black" slideshow in the "Desktop & Screen" System Preferences pane got me what I wanted. Instant blackout, via my hot corner.

# Wilson Rothman at Gizmodo - Creative Introduces Teeny Tiny Zen Stone - a $40, one gig, finger-sized MP3 player. Cute, too. In six colors. Plays MP3, WMA, WAV, and Audible formats 2 & 3. [gizmodo]

For $40 you get the 1GB player itself, about half the price of that other screen-less multicolored baby flash player you may have heard about. Creative says it will get 10 hours of playback from a fully charged internal battery. It's a basic USB-drive drag-and-drop interface.

The clip will cost you $9.99 extra. "What clip?" you ask. You know what clip.

Other accessories, shown below, include a keychain ($12.99) and an armband ($15.99) In July, Creative will introduce TravelSound Zen Stone, the tiny docking speaker system shown below, for $39.99. Powered by two AAA batteries, it will run for 20 hours.
